Essay:  Choose an article out of the newspaper or magazine that includes numbers:
1)  Summarize the essential ideas of the article
2)  Describe a few of the particular facts and conclusions that you found interesting or surprising
3)  Discuss how mathematics was used to make the writing more precise, vivid, or persuasive.

Essay:  Mathematics in the News.  Find an article from a recent newspaper or news magazine that has some quantitative or mathematical aspect.  Briefly summarize the content of the article and give the source (one paragraph), cite specific ways that mathematics is used in the article (one paragraph), and explain why the story would have been more difficult or impossible to write without mathematics (one paragraph).
